The Holy Spirit - Posted 14th November 2014 by prithvi raj
The Holy Spirit is the third Person of trinity. He proceeds from the Father & Son (Jh 15:26; 16:7). OT mentions about HS 88 times; 23 books in OT has references to HS. Holy Spirit (Ps 51:11), the Spirit of God are the expressions used in OT. NT mentions HS 264 times - 60+ times in gospels, 57 references in Acts and 132 times in epistles.
The HS has these attributes of personality
Intellect: He knows (1Cor 2:10-11) He has mind (Rom 8:27); He teaches (1Cor 2:13).
Emotions: Grieve (Ep 4:30) Love (Rom 15:30).
Will: Will of the Spirit (1Cor 12:11) (Acts 16:6).
The HS has these actions of personality
He teaches (John 14:26), witnesses (John 15:26), convicts (John 16:7-8), regenerates (John 3:5-7), directs (Acts 8:29), performs miracles (Acts 8:39), calls & sends to service (Acts 13:2, 4), intercedes (Rom 8:26), guides (Rom 8:14).
Works of the Holy Spirit in OT
Creation Genesis 1:1,2; Isaiah 40:12-14
Revelation and inspiration: 2 Timothy 3:16, 17
Selective filling: eg. Joseph (Genesis 41:38)
Holy Spirit in the life of Lord Jesus Christ
His birth (Luke 1:35) His anointing (Luke 4:18; Acts 4:27; 10:38) He was filled and led (Lk 4:1).
He was empowered (Matt 12:28; Lk 4:14-15).
Works of HS in the Universal church
HS dwells in the church (1 Co 3:16, Ep 2:21-22)
HS dwells in the believers (Ro 8:9-11, 1 Co 6:19)
HS sealed us for eternity (Ep 1:13)
HS strengthens our inner being (Ep 3:16)
By HS we overcome lust (Rom 8:13)
HS helps in our weaknesses (Rom 8:26)
We are led by HS (Rom 8:14, Gal 5:16)
He empowers us (Acts 1: 8)
Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual gifts are described in 4 places in the New Testament: Romans 12:3-8; 1 Corinthians 12-14; Ephesians 4:10, 11; 1 Peter 4:10, 11. The purpose is to edify the church (1 Cor 12:7; 14:5, 12, 26) for the common good.
Indwelling Vs Baptism Vs Filling of HS
Indwelling of the Holy Spirit describes the mystic union between a believer and the creator. Some times it is referred to as the “gift” of the Holy Spirit (John 7:37 -39; Acts 11:17; Rom 5:5; 1Cor 2:12; 2 Cor 5:5), at others times it is called an “anointing” (L k 4:18; Acts 4:27; 10:38; 1 John 2:20, 27), or even a “seal” (2Cor 1:22; Eph 1:13; 4:30). Whatever it is called, it is essential for salvation (Rom 8:9; 1 C o r 6:19). If we are not indwelt by God’s Spirit, we are not saved.
The baptism of the Holy Spirit was originally prophesied by John the Baptist (Mt 3:11; Mk 1:8; Lk 3:16; Jn 1:33; Acts 1:5) and full filled in the book of Acts (2:1-4; 10:44-46; 11:16). Here we find the Apostles’ (Acts 2:1, 5 - 7) and Cornelius’ household (Acts 10:46) speaking in tongues as evidence of God’s approval. At Pentecost, God was validating the Apostles as spokesmen and witnesses of the Resurrection. At Cornelius’ house, God was validating the first Gentiles as bonafide prospects for conversion. In neither case was the Baptism of the Holy Spirit equivalent to nor necessary for salvation. The Apostles were already saved and Cornelius commenced to be baptized in water according to the normal 1st century practice of Christian conversion. Bottom line: The only two times the N.T. identifies the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, it was not for salvation but for approval.
To be Filled with the Holy Spirit essentially means that a person is empowered by the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:15, 41, 67; 4:1; Acts 2:4; 4:8, 31; 6:3; 7:55; 9:17; 11:24; 13:9, 52). In the same way that a alcoholic is controlled by a alcohol, so a Christian should be controlled by the Holy Spirit (Eph 5:18 ; Gal 5:16)
Fruit of Holy Spirit filled life
Love (active good will, expressed toward God and man) Joy (gladness, delight, especially in response to God’s grace) Peace (Harmony both with God and our fellow man) Longsuffering (patience, forbearance, self-restraint in the face of provocation) Kindness (sweetness of temper that puts others at ease) Goodness (generosity that reaches beyond just giving what is one’s due) Faithfulness (the virtue of reliability) Gentleness (a humble and kind nature that helps to calm another’s anger) Self-control (the virtue of one who masters his desires )
