Calvinism Sermon: Total Depravity (Part 2 in series)
El contenido de la fe, para escuchar,
What are the Five Points of Calvinism? Do the Doctrines of Grace have anything, ultimately, to do with a man named John Calvin? Or, are they truly biblical and find their foundation in the Scriptures themselves? In this message, Pastor Jeff Durbin (Apologia Church/Radio/TV) teaches for our series on the Doctrines of Grace. This message was on the first letter of the acrostic, TULIP: Total Depravity. How sovereign is God? Is He mostly sovereign or completely sovereign? How important is this particular issue? Does it really matter? Are the Scriptures unclear? What is the condition of fallen human beings? Are our wills 'free' or are we enslaved to sin? We would encourage you to get out your bible, a notebook, and a pen. Watch this message and test your traditions by the Scriptures. The Scriptures are the sole infallible rule of faith, therefore, our beliefs must be consistent with the Word of God and we must be willing to abandon any belief that contradicts God's Word no matter how long we've held them or how cherished it has become. Powerful and pure truth. The opposers are just revealing their wicked, proud and hateful hearts.

So let me get this straight.....
Saved by grace, Through faith, in baptism, for good works. -
So true what you say, that one's faith should not interfere with Gods grace! Very good word. Yet there is 1 John 3:7. John was very careful to start out with a warning. A warning of impending "deception". For he must have seen this being prevalent among (so called) believer's, of having faith without works (James 2:18-20). As he noted that "doing
righteousness", was indeed the very same thing. Even to the point of the same as Christ.
Basically he is saying, if you believe, you will be this new creation, dead to
sin (Romans 6:1 1 Peter 2:24), alive to righteousness. Not a righteousness,
seen only by God and unseen by man, but a manifest (seen) Child of God, totally
separate from that manifestation which is of a child of the devil, 1 John 3:10
True brother, (There but by the grace of God, go I). But, there is this ,
"Go" word, which means deed's. Paul said Romans 15:18 NASB, "For
I will not presume to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished
through me, resulting in the obedience of the Gentiles by word and deed,"
Obedience, to Paul, was both in "word and deed", in his mind, (did he
not have this same mind, which was also in Christ?)
But, don’t you see, your speaking of mans total depravity to
make his own decision to follow Christ, apart from Gods power, is then robbing
Gods glory of said power of, “His word”!
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth;” Romans 1:16.
Again, concerning this Gospel; "How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?" Romans 10:14. It is not us, but the power of Gods word that gets hold of, us “that believe” as
there must first be a believing before there is a receiving. John 1:12,“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons
of God, even to them that believe on his name:”This very Gospel is what works on a totally depraved man, that can, upon
hearing, open his heart to receive the salvation of God!
Again, the confusion comes from thinking that God keeps certain ones from the salvation offered to man in general, “And the times of
this ignorance God winked at; but now commands all men every where to repent:
Because he has appointed a day, in the which he will judge the
world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he has given
assurance unto all men, in that he has raised him from the dead.” Acts17:30,31.How could God command repentance from all men and then not
allow it them, keeping it from them?
This is not good news!
Why would Jesus die on the cross to “atone for” the sins of the whole world, 1 John 2:2 , just to keep certain ones from said “atonement”? Rather it is , God knowing who will both, repent and take this “atoning sacrifice” for themselves, and thus, procure it! This is foreknowledge and show’s only Him to be God, and not us!
No, this opens the door for true heart felt evangelism and understanding of Proverbs 11:30 and Daniel 12:3. As the fields are "white unto harvest"! -
I believe “TULIP” theology to be unscriptural. On the other hand, I am not an Arminian and I believe in eternal security.
Total inability means sinners are unable to come to Christ unless they are first regenerated. But the Bible teaches that a man is born again when he believes, not before he believes. “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12).
Unconditional election means God arbitrarily chose some people for heaven, and others for hell. But the Bible says that God is, “not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (II Peter 3:9; cf. I Tim. 2:4).
Limited atonement means Christ died only for the elect. But First John 2:2 says, “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”
Hebrews 2:9 says, “that He by the grace of God should taste death for every man” (cf. also John 1:29; 3:16).
Irresistible grace means that the saving grace of God is effectually applied only to those whom God has determined to save (the elect). Here we can see the logical connection between “total inability” (or “total depravity”) and “irresistible grace.” Since total inability means that man is unable of believing God, and man will never come to Christ on his own, God must first change a person’s nature before he is saved.
To the staunch Calvinist, regeneration must precede conversion. But is God’s grace “irresistible”? We see many examples in the Bible of sinners resisting God’s grace. Stephen said to the Jewish leaders in Acts 7:51, “Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.”
Calvinists would argue that these stiffnecked sinners were not part of the elect and were therefore predestined for hell. But this is not what the Bible teaches.
The last doctrine in the TULIP system is the “perseverance of the saints.” This means the elect believer will continue in the state of holiness and righteousness through the work of the Holy Spirit, and the elect believer will continue in this state all the way through till he gets to heaven.
This doctrine has been called “once saved, always saved” and has been associated with the doctrine of eternal security, though there are some differences.
I must say that while I tend to agree more with the Arminians on their opposition to the first four points, I break company with them on the fifth (cf. Romans 9:35-39).
Eternal life is for eternity. It is not “temporary eternal life.”
Before moving on, let me say we can agree with the Calvinists when they are right – the sovereignty of God, eternal security, etc.
And we can agree with the Arminians when they are right – man’s responsibility, unlimited atonement, etc. However, we should not be forced to take sides in this debate. My main issue is that the Calvinist can not go up to everyone and tell them God loves them and died for their sins. -
I believe that there is a difference between what God wants to be and what he causes to happen. God desires that all would be saved, but even I know that isn't happening. Could God snap his fingers and save everyone? No. That would violate their free will.

Hey everyone. This may be a long shot but, 2016 was an incredibly tough year for my little sister and I. I am 21 years old and she is 4. I was granted custody of her after our mother was convicted and sent to prison. I have been praying constantly that God will help support us financially. I work full time and take online classes at night. I am not sure if this is God's will, but I have been looking for ways to make some extra money so that my little sister is fed and taken care. The following is a link that will take you to a bible on amazon. If you purchase it or anything on amazon after clicking the link I will receive a small commission. Prayers are also greatly appreciated- <a target="_blank" href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1433544407/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1433544407&linkCode=as2&tag=degraw55-20&linkId=0d7bb2880acf45afd54027f3b0da8ebf"

Funny how people regard calvinism as the truth without testing it... when it is tested by scripture alone. Especially where it is founded on replacement theology...
-
I would love a list of scripture references Jeff uses with each of his sermons for personal study.
-
Doesn't John 3:16 contradict Calvinism?
-
You say that "God is not a divine rapist", but that is not Biblical. In the scriptures we read how He impregnated the virgin Mary without per permission and against her free will. Is that not the definition of a divine rapist?
-
That's an incredible amount of theology and ideology for a god that doesn't exist. The Bible teaches that the sun and moon move (not the Earth) and that snow and hail are kept in a storehouse before god drops it on people. It's time to put the bronze age book of mythology back on the shelf.

Calvinism is a man made religion. Jesus died for everyone, Not just for selected people. That is not love. God is love. I pray folks will truly know the heart of Jesus. Blessings and remember Follow Jesus and not man

What a sweet melody the doctrines of grace are. Praise God!

Total Depravity/Inability is based on a fatally flawed assumption that our faith DIRECTLY affects our salvation. However, this assumption (which both Calvinism and Arminianism errantly makes) is demonstrably false. Our faith in the gospel first qualifies us as children of Abraham (a human man, not God). Then, children of Abraham inherit Christ's righteousness based on God's promise that the righteousness he gave Abraham would be inherited by his descendants. Therefore, salvation is INDIRECT. We don't need to be spiritually alive for human adoption.
Deu 30:11
“For this commandment which I command you today is not too difficult for you, nor is it out of reach.
Deu 30:19
“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants,
While most things in scripture God chooses, salvation (life or death) is something God commands us to choose for ourselves -- He even gives us a hint and says "choose life" in case we really were on the fence about which would be best. It does nothing to harm the sovereignty of God to OBEY His command and choose life or death.
Jhn 6:44
“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.
John 12:32
“And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw ALL men to Myself.”
How does obedience to Lord Jesus give glory to someone who was "dead in trespasses and sin" and needed the Grace of God in Christ Jesus and His Resurrection? Where is boasting?
Sounds like a false dichotomy to me...I'll stick with hearing the voice of Christ Jesus....
believing, repenting, obeying.....are actions of human will .....yet these actions do not nullify the full Grace and Glory to God through Christ alone.
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that
whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
Whoever....means whoever.....
"For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother."
Whoever....means whoever...
"Now without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he
who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder
of those who seek him."
Acts 17:30 Although God overlooked the ignorance of earlier times, He now commands all men everywhere to repent.
all means all . Will all ? No. why not? What did Lord Jesus say?
"And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil."
Is love an action of the will? yes. no "ism" needed to understand this. God is the Teacher. Prayerfully read John 15 :1-5.
