Perhaps the most clear lesson we learn from this story is that prayer loosens chains. Peter was bound by chains, thrown in jail…but his friends and well wishers were praying. Verse 5 tells us they were constantly praying. God heard those prayers and Peter’s chains were loosened…and he was set free. Prayer loosens chains. Maybe you and I are not bound by physical chains today, but many times we are facing emotional chains, we are bound by chains of guilt, hopelessness, heartache, misunderstanding, unforgiveness, sickness, social norms, etc. God wants you to know today, “Prayer loosens chains.” I read somewhere, “Satan tries to limit your praying because he knows that your praying will limit him.” Isn’t that so true? Prayer is the key to overcoming Satan. And praying is actually really simple. We just need to talk to God…read the Bible…sing worship songs. But we don’t do it. For whatever reason. We are easily distracted…phone calls, chores, visitors, sleep…Satan doesn’t want us to pray…and perhaps that is why he brings distractions…and we in our weakness choose to succumb to those distractions…and we don’t pray. But prayer is the only thing that can overcome Satan…it is the only thing that will loosen the chains. Many times we pray for ourselves and God sets us free. We see the breakthrough. But other times, as in this story, it is the prayers of others than works wonders in our lives. We read that Peter was tired and fell asleep, but the other disciples and believers were constantly praying for Peter. And as a result, God freed Peter from his chains. So as the disciples were praying for Peter…let us also pray for one another. If you know someone is going through a hard time…pray for them. If God brings someone to your remembrance and you don’t really know why you are thinking about that person…pray for them. Prayer loosens chains.
