One of the greatest lessons we learn from this story is about God's forgiveness. As humans it is hard for us to understand God’s forgiveness. And sometimes it even seems like stupidity. When someone hurts us purposefully and leave us behind. When someone repeats the same mistake over and over again. When someone gets an attitude and begins to treat us like we are nothing, we often don’t want to forgive them. Even if they come back to us after realizing their mistake, we are apprehensive and doubtful of their motives. Sometimes we are willing to forgive them, but only if they fulfill a list of conditions and prove to us that they have truly changed. But God’s love and forgiveness are unconditional – there are no strings attached. When we forgive someone, we often remind them of their wrongs over and over again. Especially when we have another fight. We remind them that they did X, Y and Z earlier too. But God’s love and forgiveness are complete – the offense is never brought up again. When we forgive someone, we see whether or not we feel they are deserving of that forgiveness. Have you ever said, “He doesn’t even deserve forgiveness for what he has done”? We don’t deserve His forgiveness but God chooses to give it to us anyways. When we forgive someone, we often let them back into our lives, but at a lesser post. Our best friend who abandoned us, is no longer our best friend…but just a normal friend. But, when God forgives us, He restores us as His sons and daughters – just as we were before. No difference. The Father in this story took His son back as His son, not a servant. God’s forgiveness calls for us to forgive others in the same way. Watch the video for the story and more lessons.
