The Royal Banner forward goes,
The mystic Cross refulgent glows:
Where He, in Flesh, flesh who made,
Upon the Tree of pain is laid.
O Cross! all hail! sole hope, abide
With us now in this Passion-tide:
New grace in pious hearts implant,
And pardon to the guilty grant.
Thee, mighty Trinity! One God!
Let every living creature laud;
Whom by the Cross Thou dost deliver,
O guide and govern now and ever! Amen.
Abroad the Regal Banners fly,
Now shines the Cross's mystery;
Upon it Life did death endure,
And yet by death did life procure.
Hail, Cross, of hopes the most sublime!
Now in this mournful Passion time,
Improve religious souls in grace,
The sins of criminals efface.
Blest Trinity, salvation's spring,
May every soul Thy praises sing;
To those Thou grantest conquest
By the holy Cross, rewards apply. Amen -
splendido ed intramontabile

Vexilla Regis prodeunt;
fulget Crucis mysterium,
quo carne carnis conditor
suspensus est patibulo.
The Royal Banner forward goes,
The mystic Cross refulgent glows:
Where He in Flesh, flesh who made,
Upon the Tree of pain is laid.
Quo vulneratus insuper
mucrone diro lanceae,
ut nos lavaret crimine,
manavit unda et sanguine.
Here the fell spear His wounded side
With ruthless onset opened wide:
To wash us in that cleansing flood,
Thence mingled Water flowed, and Blood.
Arbor decora et fulgida,
ornata Regis purpura,
electa digno stipite
tam sancta membra tangere.
O Tree in radiant beauty bright,
With regal purple meetly dight,
Thou chosen stem divinely graced,
Which hath those Holy Limbs embraced!
Beata, cuius brachiis
pretium pependit saeculi:
statera facta corporis,
praedam tulitque tartari.
How blest Thine arms, beyond compare,
Which Earth's Eternal Ransom bare!
That Balance where His Body laid,
The spoil of vanquished Hell outweighed.
Salve ara, salve victima,
de passionis gloria,
qua vita mortem pertulit
et morte vitam reddidit.
Hail wondrous Altar! Victim, hail!
Thy Glorious Passion shall avail!
Where death Life's very Self endured,
Yet life by that same Death secured.
O Crux ave, spes unica,
hoc Passionis tempore!
piis adauge gratiam,
reisque dele crimina.
O Cross, hail! only hope, abide
With us now in this Passiontide:
New grace in pious hearts implant,
And pardon to the guilty grant.
Te, fons salutis Trinitas,
collaudet omnis spiritus:
quos per Crucis mysterium
salvas, fove per saecula. Amen
Thee, mighty Trinity, One God!
Let every living creature laud;
Whom by the Cross Thou dost deliver,
O guide and govern now and ever. Amen -
In collegio si cantava questo meraviglioso inno di gloria alla croce di Cristo la domenica di passione e il venerdi' santo. Stupendo.

A female choir? This is a battle song, not a lullaby. There IS variety in Gregorian Chant which comes from the context of the pieces sung. Vexilla Regis ought not be sung in the same manner as the funereal Libera Me Domine. The monks of Solemnes have produced marvelous texts. Now for their dramatic renditions.

It is an extraordinary composition.

This is really beautiful! Do you mind if I use this for a small non-profit video I'm working on about religious art? It would make perfect background music. :) Thanks!

Bravi tutti.

Yes, such is the beauty of the Roman Catholic Church. Gregorian Chant like this was developed during the reign of Pope Saint Gregory the Great, who reigned as Bishop of Rome in the AD 500's. Gregorian Chant was beginning to be developed and employed starting about one-hundred and fifty years prior to Mohammad and the rise of Islam, and they express the Catholic Church's faith in the One Triune God, who gives salvation to all through Jesus Christ, the Savior of all the world.
