Westminster Shorter Catechism - Question 76-78c Ninth Commandment - Put Away Lying Ephesians 4:17-25 Halifax: 12 February 2017 Today we come to our third sermon on the ninth commandment in our sermon series on the Westminster Shorter Catechism. I mentioned to you last week that when the Lord tells us that we are not to bear false witness, He speaks against two related sins as one. 1) The sin of unjustly or maliciously harming our neighbour’s name or his reputation (which is what we looked at last week). 2) And the sin of lying—in any form (which is what we are looking at in particular this week). Q. 77 What is required in the ninth commandment? A. The ninth commandment requireth the maintaining and promoting of truth between man and man, and of our own and our neighbour’s good name, especially in witness bearing. Q. 78 What is forbidden in the ninth commandment? A. The ninth commandment forbiddeth whatsoever is prejudicial to truth, or injurious to our own or our neighbour’s good name.
